Dissertations Writing - Why is it Important?

Dissertations Writing - Why is it Important?Dissertations are often misunderstood as a difficult form of writing. In reality, they're just another way to express oneself.Dissertations are writing projects that focus on a specific area of study. They may discuss the history of some aspect of the subject, or perhaps discuss research techniques that can be used in the future. Dissertations are even used for more general topics like computers and the Internet.A thesis can be written about a more general topic. For example, the purpose of dissertations is to support one's knowledge about a certain subject, the dissertation. Thesis is a more prestigious form of writing than dissertations, as it is often the beginning of a career in academia. However, unlike a thesis, a dissertation is not completed to support one's education.Dissertations can be written at any time, but there are certain times when this writing style is most appropriate. Dissertations are usually given during the final sem ester of a four-year college and sometimes taken before the semester begins. Students are usually able to write at their own pace, and they can put everything in their own way, even if the professor tells them to stop at certain points. Since dissertations are given to support their school's curriculum, they should be written in a certain way to make them understandable by the professor.Dissertations are usually written to support one's education, so they should be about topics that are relevant to the area of study that the student wants to learn about. It is not necessary to write about every detail of a topic. It is suggested that you write about three major topics, one each for each year of college.Dissertations should not be written for the sake of writing it, but rather for supporting the actual course work. If you feel like you have the ability to write well on your own, by all means do so. However, it is always better to have someone else write your dissertation for you.Diss ertations are a personal matter and should be addressed only to the person who wrote it. An exception would be in the case of real estate, where it is necessary to address the contract. Dissertations should never be discussed with the professor unless he or she authorizes it. If the professor finds out that you discussed your dissertation with other students, you could be held accountable for plagiarism.Dissertations should be written in clear and concise language and should contain proper citation of sources. Dissertations should contain only the information necessary to support the purpose of the dissertation.

Although there are negatives of multinational corporations, there are also positives. Business done overseas provides jobs for the people of the host country, improving the standard of living, and transfers technology. Richard T. De George explains moral standards, in five basic theses, that multinational corporations must adhere to in order to maintain corporate ethics. De George†¦show more content†¦I partially agree with this thesis. Just because MNCs are capable of changing a country, they have no obligation to do so. It is not their moral responsibility to do so either. Although they should support just background institutions, they do not have to. De George s fifth and final thesis explains that responsibility is li nked to ownership. Whatever portion one owns of the MNC one must take that amount of accountability. This means that what host countries cannot expect is that they can demand control without accepting correlative responsibility, (DeGeorge, p. 266). I agree with this thesis. Whoever is in charge of something must become aware that it is them who must take the liability. Part Two: Review Question #2 Today, American MNCs operating overseas face many moral dilemmas. I feel the most important dilemma regards not only the exploitation of resources and employees, but how the MNC affects the host economy. MNCs affect their employees welfare directly, but also affect the host country s citizens indirectly. By providing jobs the spending capital within the host economy increases, and creates a better standard of living. Personally, I believe that MNCs operating in Third World countries do more good than harm. I agree with Ian Maitland, author of In Defense of International Sweatshops. Develop and Use Emotional Intelligence in Nursing

Question: Discuss about theDevelop and Use Emotional Intelligence in Nursing. Answer: Introduction A person who accurately perceives their self and others emotions are wise leaders - Travis Bradberry (2009) Nursing is an art and science. Nursing means giving physical and emotional care to relieve the suffering of the people (Douglas, 2004). A nurse should be emotionally intelligent to meet her patients needs. Emotional intelligence is always learned but not acquired. Being intelligence is wise that too being emotionally intelligent is too wise to be a good nurse. Emotional intelligence is more than being intellect but also includes practical aspects in the working environment. The term emotional intelligence means the understanding and managing of ones self and others emotions. This essay deals about the methods to develop and use emotional intelligence for a nurse for the patient and organizational welfare. As a nurse manager, I will help her to develop self and social awareness as given in Faculty assistance programme, 2013. I will motivate her to be aware of her own emotions and its effect on her thoughts, behavior, values and goals of the hospital; she is working (Holland, 2012). I will help her to understand the needs and concerns of other people and how her emotional cues affects others thought and behavior towards her. I will explain her to avoid unnecessary facial expression, body movements and to have polite and assertive way of expressions. I will make her to identify her own cultural expressions of emotions and values unique to her culture and her colleagues culture too. I will help her to understand that culture shapes ones intelligence and gives unique identity and to be cautious about expressing her own culture and value others culture (Douglas, 2004). Basically nursing is not a culturally free but a culturally determined profession. I will make her to understand the method of communication, space and organization of other cultures. I will help her to be culturally competent nurse by cooperating with others regardless of racial, ethnic or cultural heritage. I will motivate her to develop effective interpersonal relationship and respect others culture so as to be an effective nurse. I will arrange regular meetings with all the staff members so that she can talk and mingle with others. In the beginning I will help her to understand the meaning of the words spoken by the tone and facial expression. This will motivate her to understand others language, pronunciation and culture to increase her adaptability to the new circumstances. These regular meetings and staff welfare programs will help her to express her feelings and thoughts about her work. I will help her to find solutions for her problems. I will delegate work based on her competency so as to offer flexibility in work places. I will motivate her to perform self assessment and social assessment to identify the effect of her behavior and emotions on others and to understand the effect of behavior on interpersonal relationship. I will help her to manage or regulate herself. I will help her to assess her own strength and weaknesses and to overcome her difficulties. I will redirect her disruptive emotions and to make her to adapt to new circumstances (Holland, 2012). Based on the above mentioned policies the nurse manager should develop and use emotional intelligent management practices. The code of conduct should be instructed to the nurse to help them to be culturally competent and appropriate. They should be explained about the purposes and guidelines of code of conduct and about the importance of maintaining interpersonal relationship and espirit de corps. The nurse should give clear instructions, expectations, rules and policies and explain the employees as what to do and how to do and when to do. The conflict most commonly arises in a working area due to difference in thoughts, opinions and skill of care giving. The nurse should be empowered with conflict resolution skills as confronting, bargaining, smoothing, avoiding the conflict, forcing for solution and if needed unilateral action. A nurse manager should be empowered to work in the hospital environment (Douglas, 2004). The family friendly initiatives such as educational assistance for the children, paid parental leave, helping them to bring their young child at lunch or coffee breaks should be offered (Straz, 2015). This flexibility in work will improve the outcomes of the nurses. The opportunities should be given to the nurses in meetings to express their feedback and suggestions in the organizational decisions (Douglas, 2004). They should be involved in planning the organizational activities and delegating appropriate work. The nurses should be encouraged to self reflect among team members. She should be encouraged to analyze her strengths, weakness, capabilities and finding solutions and develop self confidence. The nurse manager should provide criteria and help the nurses to score their physical, social, emotional and mental health. The nurse manager should provide safe environment for the nurses with dignity and respect. The nurses should be protected from harassments as unlawful and sexual harassment, bullying (repeated unwanted behaviour), vilification and victimisation (treating unfairly). In case of unwanted behaviours, a nurse manager should motivate the nurse to take any of the following options. Assist the nurse in self managing the issues by making direct complaint to the authorities. It should be practiced if there is no serious issue. Informal resolution may be needed at times, which involves the complainants manager discusses the issue with the respondent and takes the appropriate course of action. When these two options fails, formal resolution should be taken, in which a formal complaint should be given in writing to a nurse manager or human resources department. The next level is seeking for an external resolution, which involves registering complaint in any of the human rights commission as the V ictorian equal opportunity and Human Rights Commission, or Federal Human Rights Commission, etc. The nurse manager should maintain neutrality in making decisions and avoid personal and professional bias. In contrast, if there is any false complaint made on the person, severe disciplinary action might be taken on the person and may terminate the employee from the job. The information related with the complaint should be kept confidentially. The issues should be documented in clear words. The nurse managers should educate her subordinates about the methods to handle various harassments. An effective nurse manager should assess the strengths of the nurses and assign right task for a right person by right direction in right circumstances. She should encourage the staff nurses by giving away the awards based on their performances to achieve the organizational outcomes. Thus emotional intelligence makes a nurse leader to be more perfect and adaptable with positive motivation to be a Smart Nurse. Invisible Man Timed Writing free essay sample

Ashley Black Mrs. Gill AP Lit. 4th hour 20 September 2013 Invisible Man Timed Writing Everyone experiences that one pivotal moment in their life where everything changes; this moment defines who one is and establishes one’s place in the world. In Ralph Ellison’s novel, Invisible Man, the narrator experiences his pivotal moment when he burns all of the papers in his briefcase. This moment shapes the meaning of the novel as a whole by emphasizing invisibility and self-discovery Throughout the novel the narrator is constantly changing his identity in order to please his superiors and make something of himself in the world. This is demonstrated when the narrator does everything he can to be a model student and please his headmaster, Dr. Bleedsoe. This is also explicated when he changes his name—in other words his identity—to become a speaker for the Brotherhood. In each of these instances the narrator changes who is only to be used and abused and exploited. We will write a custom essay sample on Invisible Man Timed Writing or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page However, no matter how many times he finds out that he is being used he continues to do whatever he can to please those around him. It is not until the narrator experiences his pivotal moment that he finally stops trying to please everyone and starts living for himself. By forsaking the Brotherhood through his pivotal moment, the narrator finally realizes that he had just been a tool used by all of those who he had trusted and looked up to. No one ever sees him for who he really is; he is invisible. As a result, he comes to the revelation that pleasing them at the cost of his identity will get him nowhere in the world. Therefore, by burning all of the papers that identify him, he is burning all of the identities that society has created for him in order to create his own. Moving on, the meaning of the author’s work as a whole is discovering one’s self at one’s own expense. In other words not losing yourself to the competitive nature of society by becoming what others wants you to be. The  narrator’s pivotal moment enhances this meaning through its introduction of invisibility and self-discovery. To illustrate, when the author burns all of the papers that identify him, he finally realizes that he is invisible. Those around him do not see him even though he has done everything he could to please them. He has no identity. Thus, the only way for him to gain his own identity is to stop obeying what society says and becoming what society want him to becom e. As he realizes that what the world around him has made him is not who he wants to be the narrator discovers himself. This once again connects back to the author’s meaning of not losing one’s self to society. Ralph Ellison’s, Invisible Man, effectively exemplifies a Bildungsroman. It does this by containing a character that undergoes a discovery, one that explicates his â€Å"coming of age,† which is incited when he burns all of the papers in his briefcase that identify him. This pivotal moment allows the narrator to acquire a new understanding of who he is and contributes to the author’s meaning of not losing one’s self to society by emphasizing invisibility and self-discovery.

This truly expresses our general rejection of conventional adult standards. This is another cause of alcohol use and possible abuse youths. The third cause is a symbol of aggressive and masculine behaviour. As we all know, it is more commonly found in boys. Teenagers like to create their sense of power and authority for themselves, by being able to outdo the next person in drinking competitions. Such competitiveness is conducive to an abusive drinking style. Teenagers find themselves in a stage between childhood and adulthood. Teenagers try to imitate others and want others to recognize them as adults. There is a belief among teenagers that drinking symbolizes adult status, and therefore b...

Different branches Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Different branches - Essay Example These branches have different roles. The legislative branch has a primary role of making laws. Laws are made, discussed, and voted on by the Congress. In addition, the President’s appointments to various positions such as the Cabinet, Supreme Court, and the federal courts are approved by the Senate implying that this is a role of the legislature. The executive carries out the function of enforcing the laws that have been previously passed by the legislature (U.S. Federal Government, n.d). Here, the President has the sole duty of making laws official. The cabinet advises the President on important matters. The judiciary is mandated with the role of interpreting the laws and applying laws to cases. In addition, the judiciary determines whether a law violates the constitution. The main reason why the U.S government has three branches is to balance power through a system known as a check and balance system. This system ensures that no branch is overpowered and keeps the power in check since no individuals can allocate themselves more power than the constitution provides. A three-branch government was also appropriate with respect to controlling the government as all branches have equal responsibilities (U.S. Federal Government, n.d). The basic concept behind the separation of powers is distributing power among individuals and groups. This was to ensure that no one group or individual had absolute power over others to the point of making individual decisions meant for a country. The system of check and balances ensures that each group has some form of power over the other. Federalism can be said to be a political concept where a territory is governed by two governmental levels. This can be expounded from the U.S context of having the constitution allocating certain powers to both state governments and the central government. Similarly, the state governments have significant power on specific

Difference in athletic funding behind women's sports in the ACC Research Paper

Difference in athletic funding behind women's sports in the ACC conference and NCAA - Research Paper Example The ACC is acknowledged to be one of the six university power gatherings, all of which appreciate impressive media scope and immediate fitting the bill for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the appearance of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five gatherings with a contractual tie-into a "right to gain entrance bowl", the successors to the BCS (Adams, 2004). My present objectives for this research are to uncover the different wellsprings of subsidizing for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the National Collegiate Association (NCAA), the challenges that this two real affiliations confront and how they can beat their everyday issues regarding operation and part enlistment, financing and extension arranges and methodology. My present contention here is that these two companionships might as well accept the time and consideration that they merit by the neighborhood government to lure more young people, offer more grants and fiscal support to learners consequently making them succeed towards the right way. Literature Review Consistent with a report recorded by Boston College in agree-ability with the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act, varsity male sports members appropriated $1.7 million progressively in physically identified understudy help than female members did throughout the 2011-12 season, notwithstanding there being one and only more male than female member. This hole brings about male competitors gaining a normal of $25,000 yearly, while female jocks get a normal of $20,000 every twelve-months (Heights Editorial Board, 2013). Although from the start, it look like this student aid appears to be alarmingly vast, in examination with comparable schools, it is less so. For instance, at the University of Miami, male jocks on normal gain $39,000 every twelve-months, while female players accept just $30,000 yearly, a crevice of $9,000 in correlation to Bc's hole of about $5,000. At Wake Forest Univ ersity, the hole is about $6,000 energetic about ladies (Heights Editorial Board, 2013). These schools are less great in keeping the amount of male and female members equivalent, then again. At Wake Forest, there are 238 male sports members and just 124 female members. Duke University has a crevice of just about $2,000, however correspondingly to Wake Forest has a vast hole in members 374 men to 274 females (Pittsburgh, 2010). It appears that the Athletic Department is giving equivalent chances for male and female contenders, anyhow to a more terrific degree than comparative ACC schools. In the most recent 10 years, the amount of male and female members has never contrasted by more than 30 sportspeople in either bearing, and frequently switches between additional men and more ladies. While the $1.7 million aid is not to a great degree shocking, we are concerned by what amount of an expansion this is from past years(Keating, 2012). For instance, in 2010, when there were 16 more male members, the money was just $940,000, consistent with the report. In 2009, the year with the following

Grammatical aspect Essay Example for Free

Grammatical aspect Essay Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific time in mind. Examples: †¢ I saw a movie yesterday. †¢ I didnt see a play yesterday. †¢ Last year, I traveled to Japan. †¢ Last year, I didnt travel to Korea. †¢ Did you have dinner last night? †¢ She washed her car. †¢ He didnt wash his car. USE 2 A Series of Completed Actions [pic] We use the Simple Past to list a series of completed actions in the past. These actions happen 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on. Examples: †¢ I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim. †¢ He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00. †¢ Did you add flour, pour in the milk, and then add the eggs? USE 3 Duration in Past [pic] The Simple Past can be used with a duration which starts and stops in the past. A duration is a longer action often indicated by expressions such as: for two years, for five minutes, all day, all year, etc. Examples: †¢ I lived in Brazil for two years. †¢ Shauna studied Japanese for five years. †¢ They sat at the beach all day. †¢ They did not stay at the party the entire time. †¢ We talked on the phone for thirty minutes. †¢ A: How long did you wait for them? B: We waited for one hour. USE 4 Habits in the Past [pic] The Simple Past can also be used to describe a habit which stopped in the past. It can have the same meaning as used to. To make it clear that we are talking about a habit, we often add expressions such as: always, often, usually, never, when I was a child, when I was younger, etc. Examples: †¢ I studied French when I was a child. †¢ He played the violin. †¢ He didnt play the piano. †¢ Did you play a musical instrument when you were a kid? †¢ She worked at the movie theater after school. †¢ They never went to school, they always skipped class. USE 5 Past Facts or Generalizations [pic] The Simple Past can also be used to describe past facts or generalizations which are no longer true. As in USE 4 above, this use of the Simple Past is quite similar to the expression used to. Examples: †¢ She was shy as a child, but now she is very outgoing. †¢ He didnt like tomatoes before. †¢ Did you live in Texas when you were a kid? †¢ People paid much more to make cell phone calls in the past. IMPORTANT When-Clauses Happen First. Clauses are groups of words which have meaning but are often not complete sentences. Some clauses begin with the word when such as when I dropped my pen or when class began These clauses are called when-clauses, and they are very important. The examples below contain when-clauses. Examples: †¢ When I paid her one dollar, she answered my question. †¢ She answered my question when I paid her one dollar. When-clauses are important because they always happen first when both clauses are in the Simple Past. Both of the examples above mean the same thing: first, I paid her one dollar, and then, she answered my question. It is not important whether when I paid her one dollar is at the beginning of the sentence or at the end of the sentence. However, the example below has a different meaning. First, she answered my question, and then, I paid her one dollar. Example: †¢ I paid her one dollar when she answered my question. ADVERB PLACEMENT The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc. Examples: †¢ You just called Debbie. †¢ Did you just call Debbie? Past Continuous FORM [was/were + present participle] Examples: †¢ You were studying when she called. †¢ Were you studying when she called? †¢ You were not studying when she called. Complete List of Past Continuous Forms USE 1 Interrupted Action in the Past [pic] Use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is usually a shorter action in the Simple Past. Remember this can be a real interruption or just an interruption in time. Examples: †¢ I was watching TV when she called. †¢ When the phone rang, she was writing a letter. †¢ While we were having the picnic, it started to rain. †¢ What were you doing when the earthquake started? †¢ I was listening to my iPod, so I didnt hear the fire alarm. †¢ You were not listening to me when I told you to turn the oven off. †¢ While John was sleeping last night, someone stole his car. †¢ Sammy was waiting for us when we got off the plane. †¢ While I was writing the email, the computer suddenly went off. †¢ A: What were you doing when you broke your leg? B: I was snowboarding. USE 2 Specific Time as an Interruption [pic] In USE 1, described above, the Past Continuous is interrupted by a shorter action in the Simple Past. However, you can also use a specific time as an interruption. Examples: †¢ Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner. †¢ At midnight, we were still driving through the desert. †¢ Yesterday at this time, I was sitting at my desk at work. IMPORTANT In the Simple Past, a specific time is used to show when an action began or finished. In the Past Continuous, a specific time only interrupts the action. Examples: †¢ Last night at 6 PM, I ate dinner. I started eating at 6 PM. †¢ Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner. I started earlier; and at 6 PM, I was in the process of eating dinner. USE 3 Parallel Actions [pic] When you use the Past Continuous with two actions in the same sentence, it expresses the idea that both actions were happening at the same time. The actions are parallel. Examples: †¢ I was studying while he was making dinner. †¢ While Ellen was reading, Tim was watching television. †¢ Were you listening while he was talking? †¢ I wasnt paying attention while I was writing the letter, so I made several mistakes. †¢ What were you doing while you were waiting? †¢ Thomas wasnt working, and I wasnt working either. †¢ They were eating dinner, discussing their plans, and having a good time. USE 4 Atmosphere In English, we often use a series of parallel actions to describe the atmosphere at a particular time in the past. Example: †¢ When I walked into the office, several people were busily typing, some were talking on the phones, the boss was yelling directions, and customers were waiting to be helped. One customer was yelling at a secretary and waving his hands. Others were complaining to each other about the bad service. USE 5 Repetition and Irritation with Always [pic] The Past Continuous with words such as always or constantly expresses the idea that something irritating or shocking often happened in the past. The concept is very similar to the expression used to but with negative emotion. Remember to put the words always or constantly between be and verb+ing. Examples: †¢ She was always coming to class late. †¢ He was constantly talking. He annoyed everyone. †¢ I didnt like them because they were always complaining. While vs. When Clauses are groups of words which have meaning, but are often not complete sentences. Some clauses begin with the word when such as when she called or when it bit me. Other clauses begin with while such as while she was sleeping and while he was surfing. When you talk about things in the past, when is most often followed by the verb tense Simple Past, whereas while is usually followed by Past Continuous. While expresses the idea of during that time. Study the examples below. They have similar meanings, but they emphasize different parts of the sentence. Examples: †¢ I was studying when she called. †¢ While I was studying, she called. REMEMBER Non-Continuous Verbs / Mixed Verbs It is important to remember that Non-Continuous Verbs cannot be used in any continuous tenses. Also, certain non-continuous meanings for Mixed Verbs cannot be used in continuous tenses. Instead of using Past Continuous with these verbs, you must use Simple Past. Examples: †¢ Jane was being at my house when you arrived. Not Correct †¢ Jane was at my house when you arrived. Correct ADVERB PLACEMENT The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc. Examples: †¢ You were just studying when she called. †¢ Were you just studying when she called? ACTIVE / PASSIVE Examples: †¢ The salesman was helping the customer when the thief came into the store. Active †¢ The customer was being helped by the salesman when the thief came into the store. Passive Past Perfect FORM [had + past participle] Examples: †¢ You had studied English before you moved to New York. †¢ Had you studied English before you moved to New York? †¢ You had not studied English before you moved to New York. Complete List of Past Perfect Forms USE 1 Completed Action Before Something in the Past [pic] The Past Perfect expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past. Examples: †¢ I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Kauai. †¢ I did not have any money because I had lost my wallet. †¢ Tony knew Istanbul so well because he had visited the city several times. †¢ Had Susan ever studied Thai before she moved to Thailand? †¢ She only understood the movie because she had read the book. †¢ Kristine had never been to an opera before last night. †¢ We were not able to get a hotel room because we had not booked in advance. †¢ A: Had you ever visited the U. S. before your trip in 2006? B: Yes, I had been to the U. S. once before. USE 2 Duration Before Something in the Past (Non-Continuous Verbs) [pic] With Non-Continuous Verbs and some non-continuous uses of Mixed Verbs, we use the Past Perfect to show that something started in the past and continued up until another action in the past. Examples: †¢ We had had that car for ten years before it broke down. †¢ By the time Alex finished his studies, he had been in London for over eight years. †¢ They felt bad about selling the house because they had owned it for more than forty years. Although the above use of Past Perfect is normally limited to Non-Continuous Verbs and non-continuous uses of Mixed Verbs, the words live, work, teach, and study are sometimes used in this way even though they are NOT Non-Continuous Verbs. IMPORTANT Specific Times with the Past Perfect [pic]. Unlike with the Present Perfect, it is possible to use specific time words or phrases with the Past Perfect. Although this is possible, it is usually not necessary. Example: †¢ She had visited her Japanese relatives once in 1993 before she moved in with them in 1996. MOREOVER If the Past Perfect action did occur at a specific time, the Simple Past can be used instead of the Past Perfect when before or after is used in the sentence. The words before and after actually tell you what happens first, so the Past Perfect is optional. For this reason, both sentences below are correct. Examples: †¢ She had visited her Japanese relatives once in 1993 before she moved in with them in 1996. †¢ She visited her Japanese relatives once in 1993 before she moved in with them in 1996. HOWEVER [pic] If the Past Perfect is not referring to an action at a specific time, Past Perfect is not optional. Compare the examples below. Here Past Perfect is referring to a lack of experience rather than an action at a specific time. For this reason, Simple Past cannot be used. Examples: †¢ She never saw a bear before she moved to Alaska. Not Correct †¢ She had never seen a bear before she moved to Alaska. Correct ADVERB PLACEMENT The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc. Examples: †¢ You had previously studied English before you moved to New York. †¢ Had you previously studied English before you moved to New York? ACTIVE / PASSIVE Examples: †¢ George had repaired many cars before he received his mechanics license. Active †¢ Many cars had been repaired by George before he received his mechanics license. Passive Past Perfect Continuous FORM [had been + present participle] Examples: †¢ You had been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived. †¢ Had you been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived? †¢ You had not been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived. Complete List of Past Perfect Continuous Forms USE 1 Duration Before Something in the Past [pic] We use the Past Perfect Continuous to show that something started in the past and continued up until another time in the past. For five minutes and for two weeks are both durations which can be used with the Past Perfect Continuous. Notice that this is related to the Present Perfect Continuous; however, the duration does not continue until now, it stops before something else in the past. Examples: †¢ They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived. †¢ She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business. †¢ How long had you been waiting to get on the bus? †¢ Mike wanted to sit down because he had been standing all day at work. †¢ James had been teaching at the university for more than a year before he left for Asia. †¢ A: How long had you been studying Turkish before you moved to Ankara? B: I had not been studying Turkish very long. USE 2 Cause of Something in the Past [pic] Using the Past Perfect Continuous before another action in the past is a good way to show cause and effect. Examples: †¢ Jason was tired because he had been jogging. †¢ Sam gained weight because he had been overeating. †¢ Betty failed the final test because she had not been attending class. Past Continuous vs. Past Perfect Continuous If you do not include a duration such as for five minutes, for two weeks or since Friday, many English speakers choose to use the Past Continuous rather than the Past Perfect Continuous. Be careful because this can change the meaning of the sentence. Past Continuous emphasizes interrupted actions, whereas Past Perfect Continuous emphasizes a duration of time before something in the past. Study the examples below to understand the difference. Examples: †¢ He was tired because he was exercising so hard. This sentence emphasizes that he was tired because he was exercising at that exact moment. †¢ He was tired because he had been exercising so hard. This sentence emphasizes that he was tired because he had been exercising over a period of time. It is possible that he was still exercising at that moment OR that he had just finished. REMEMBER Non-Continuous Verbs / Mixed Verbs It is important to remember that Non-Continuous Verbs cannot be used in any continuous tenses. Also, certain non-continuous meanings for Mixed Verbs cannot be used in continuous tenses. Instead of using Past Perfect Continuous with these verbs, you must use Past Perfect. Examples: †¢ The motorcycle had been belonging to George for years before Tina bought it. Not Correct †¢ The motorcycle had belonged to George for years before Tina bought it. Correct ADVERB PLACEMENT. The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc. Examples: †¢ You had only been waiting there for a few minutes when she arrived. †¢ Had you only been waiting there for a few minutes when she arrived? ACTIVE / PASSIVE Examples: †¢ Chef Jones had been preparing the restaurants fantastic dinners for two years before he moved to Paris. Active †¢ The restaurants fantastic dinners had been being prepared by Chef Jones for two years before he moved to Paris. Passive NOTE: Passive forms of the Past Perfect Continuous are not common.
